Advances in biotechnology are creating new opportunities across sectors, from agriculture to medicine and environmental management. At the same time, ensuring their safe use remains essential.
Target 17 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework focuses on strengthening capacity and implementation for biosafety measures to regulate, manage and control potential risks associated with the use and release of living modified organisms resulting from biotechnology, while also promoting the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from biotechnology.
By supporting participation in research and improving access to its outcomes – particularly for developing countries – this target contributes to both innovation and the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
